Racism, Not Race, Causes Healthcare Disparities
The Work
C-CARE in Health is a group of people who have come together from across the Chicagoland with the purpose of creating more equitable, antiracist, and evidence-based healthcare for all. Our work specifically targets race-based medicine, which occurs when a person’s race is used to make medical decisions regarding their diagnoses or treatment. This work is rooted in the knowledge that race is a social construct, distinct from ancestry, and racism, not race, causes healthcare disparities. Our group was borne out of the understanding that through collaborative action and sharing of resources, ideas, and knowledge, we strengthen our ability for impact, solidarity, and consistency in patient care. We have worked together on educational resources and presentations, advocacy, and tangible change to race-neutral, race-conscious healthcare practices.

Race-Based Medicine and Healthcare Disparities
Race-based medicine takes many forms, including the incorporation of someone’s race when deciding which medication to prescribe for high blood pressure, or when estimating how well a person’s kidneys are functioning. Race-based medicine incorrectly assumes that race is determined by a person’s biology. In other words, it assumes that people’s bodies are inherently different from one another because of their race. When race is used in medical decision making, patient care might be delayed or otherwise harmful or inadequate. People of color, especially Black people, are most adversely affected by this practice. An example of this is Black people being added to kidney transplant lists later, and staying on the list longer prior to receiving a kidney. Please see our resources list below for more information.
